The Power of Brands

Why do we care about brands?  The answer seems obvious, but there is so much more to it.  Companies spend millions on advertising, because they understand the power of the brand.  Imagine, just for fun, the quality, fit, color, and everything else is the same between two pairs of jeans, yet one is Levi’s and costs $100, and the other is generic and costs $40.  Which one would you buy?

Wired recently published a very interesting article on the subject, in their frontal cortex blog.  It’s not a new subject, but it is always interesting to think on.

Does it make me a follower, a conformist if I buy Levi’s instead of some generic jeans, assuming they are the same in every way except the name.  I don’t think so.  But, does it make me cool in the eyes of others?  Maybe it helps, but I’m not so sure about that either.   Still, I definitely bought the Levi’s.

Obviously, brands usually advertise quality, not just a look or logo, but hypotheticals are fun, and in some cases applicable.

Check out the article.
