On the verge of SXSW, I imagine most of you are storing up on sleep and over-hydrating in preparation for late nights and a two week diet consisting only of free beer and liquor (and an occasional breakfast taco if you’re lucky). So, since you’ll be good and rested, kick off this SXSW with a good old fashioned dance party… in the middle of the street! No RSVP needed, no guest lists, no cover…just grab a boombox and have fun. (details after the jump)
Come help Lamebook.com as we Fight for Our Right to Parody! As you may or may not know, Lamebook.com is in a legal battle with Facebook about keeping their name. So this Friday they will be having a huge party at our favorite bar to defend the 1st Amendment and collect donations! The party is free but there’s a suggested donation of $5 that will go towards the legal fund. Find out more after the jump!
It’s only 10 AM right now (in Austin) but it is Thursday, which means it is the start of the weekend (in Austin). That being the case, you should get your mind in the right place by watching this cool time lapse of a sorta-typical if not youngish backyard BBQ. I’m not insinuating that older folks don’t have beer pong at their BBQ’s, but when I was home last weekend my parents weren’t setting up the red plastic cups in any sort of diamond shaped patterns.
We became instant fans of the band Shotgun Party while hanging out at the Renegade Craft Fair this weekend. They set up and played a couple of sets right next to our booth both Saturday and Sunday. In the age of AutoTune and becoming internet famous its nice to see people with actual musical talent kicking ass. The band consists of Jenny Parrott (pictured above in our school portrait photo booth), Katy Rose Cox on fiddle and Austin Andrew-Petersen on the stand-up bass. Their brand of Texas Swing and Folk music is incredible and playful. Between their obvious musical talents, showmanship and songwriting abilities they’re a real pleasure to watch. I bought their album, Mean Old Way, today and give it a big thumbs up. Operatar, More Romantic Than Texas and Canned Peaches are my favorite tracks. I embedded a couple of videos of them playing after the jump.
It’s kind of hard for any of us here at Public School to pass up the opportunity to check out great art. Or listen to amazing music. Or eat free food. Or drink free drinks. That’s why we’re so pumped about this year’s Arthouse 5×7 event! It promises to have all of the above. We’re pretty sure the only way to make it better is if they some how worked in a 40 gallon vat of queso.
Unlike previous years which consisted on a single opening night event, Arthouse is splitting up 5×7 into two nights of fun in a new location – the Whitley Building at 301 Brazos.
The opening night event, “Art SPLURGE” – which takes place Thursday, May 13th - gives attendees an evening of DJs, free food and drink and most importantly first dibs at the hundreds of pieces of original art. Tickets for Thursday are $125.
Friday night’s “Art SOCIAL” is the perfect alternative for those who want to get in on the early selection but need to save their money for the art itself. Music will be provided by Balmorhea and DJs, and you can enjoy great food from Frank and beverages from Budweiser. Tickets for the Social are $30 for individuals or $125 for groups of 5.
Saturday and Sunday are free and open to the public
Make sure to keep an eye out for a ticket giveaways here and on our twitter!
