Kevin Reid of Dallas, Texas is talented as all get out. These posters he designed featuring the illustrations of Judy Unger, for Central Market are all kinds of pretty. I’ve enjoyed the recent return to more illustration based advertising that we’ve seen, and this is a perfect example.
The problem with digging around the Library of Congress‘ collections is that you can easily spend hours doing it. Sometimes you’ll find amazing stuff and sometimes you’ll see nothing but old scanned paperwork. Today though, I found a ton of American Advertising from between roughly 1840 and 1875. The type alone is just beautiful, but the illustrations are something to gawk at as well. Hours lost or not, the Library of Congress is a treasure trove of inspiration today.
Why do we care about brands? The answer seems obvious, but there is so much more to it. Companies spend millions on advertising, because they understand the power of the brand. Imagine, just for fun, the quality, fit, color, and everything else is the same between two pairs of jeans, yet one is Levi’s and costs $100, and the other is generic and costs $40. Which one would you buy?
Wired recently published a very interesting article on the subject, in their frontal cortex blog. It’s not a new subject, but it is always interesting to think on.
In the future your car will only have three wheels and will include a hydraulic lift to help you change the one front tire that steers. If you think I’m kidding then you haven’t heard of the Davis Three Wheeler or seen the video about it and other retro-futuristic car designs after the jump.
Wieden + Kennedy has been on a roll lately. In the last 30 days they have convinced me that I need a Dodge Challenger and that I should start using Old Spice. Of course it didn’t surprise me when I was blown away by this great video produced for their W+K 12 program. They enlisted the help of a guy named Javan Ivey who had developed this animation technique that he calls Stratastencil. It’s a beautiful project befitting an amazing agency.
