the second from the top  is the great radio comedian Fred Allen

Third from the bottom is the great Paul Winchell, with his dummy Jerry Mahoney. Winchell also did the voice of Tigger in the original Winnie the Pooh shorts and films. Most people don’t know he pioneered the first artificial heart after leaving show business.

Always fascinating and unsettling, except for Winchell who was a complete genius!   Great collection!

5th from the top, talking to the lady, is Lon Chaney Sr. in “The Unholy Three”. I think this is the later ‘talkie’ version. The last movie he made I believe.

btw. “bauchredner” is german for Ventriloquist. bauch means stomach/tummy and redner is “a speaker” so it’s quite literally “a person who talks with his stomach”.

which, as a quick to wikipedia taught me, is basically the translation for (the latin) Ventriloquist:
“The name comes from the Latin for to speak from the stomach, i.e. venter (belly) and loqui (speak).”

I think there is a basis for a class action suit against the producers of ‘Magic’ and ‘Dead of Night’ on behalf of the public who, until those movies came along, all had a good laugh at the antics of the dummies. Just kidding, there is a place for horror – but not on my screen. Ventriloquism is a good basis for a comedy act and a great change from the never-ending boring ‘observational humour’ that passes for comedy now. See Jeff Dunham or London Bobby.

There is a great episode of  KING OF THE HILL that involves one of the adult characters having a life long terror of a ventriloquist’s dummy. I won’t tell you how the episode ends, but everyone who was creeped out by these pictures will sleep better after watching it.

Super Creepy!……um, why is that lady grabbing her own breast? I laughed so hard when I saw that one!
The faces are just unnerving! Is it because they build their own and they’re just bad artists, or are they actually trying to creep people out?

I plead guilty for the creation of “Fats”in the film version of Bill Goldman’s novel MAGIC.
More than a few youngsters lost sleep over him.  And the commercial was pulled off NBC because of all the negative feed-back from parents.
But more than a few young ladies thought Fats was “hot”, so go figure.

These are absolutely fabulous! My Aunt Vespa’s second husband was a
ventriloquist’s dummy. Needless to say the marriage was soon annulled…

Damn, aside from the talented Paul Winchell and his dummy side kick, this has to be one of the creepiest photo collections I’ve ever seen. And the 10th picture down is just so, so,..wrong.

the 12th couple is Paul Winchell and his dummy Jerry Mahoney. Paul was no dummy himself.He had the first U.S.patent on an implantable artificial heart. Later he is remembered as the voice of  Tigger in the Disney Pooh films.
