World of Geekcraft

Roughly a year ago Cody, Will and myself were asked by Chronicle Books in San Francisco to produce a book Susan Beal was publishing with them. Titled World of Geekcraft (now on sale), it is a collection of 25 handmade geeky themed projects. It took us about 6 months of production time for the photography, illustration and design and last week we finally got an advance copy of the finished product.

Cody did all of the layout and design, Will did the super geeky illustrations and patterns and I did all of the photography. From what we were told, it was one of the first books that they have produced where the photographer and designers were in the same place and could work closely from start to finish. For us it meant more collaboration and consideration on how the design and photography could compliment one another in the book.

We wanted to push the geeky aspect of everything while still keeping some of the homeyness of a lot of Chronicle’s books so we opted to do two photographs of each project. One lifestyle shot of the project being used and one super tight detail shot on tacky wood paneling. The same held true for all of the wacky pop-culture geek illustrations Will and Cody worked in throughout the book.

All in all, we are really proud of how the project turned out. Big thanks to Jessica Olsen for helping with production and acquiring the seemingly endless number of props used in the book. As I mentioned before, it is up for sale on Chronicle’s site.

Thanks man. We also threw in Cody’s Swayze print in the mobile shot and some polariods of Cody and Matt in the magnet shot. I was fun sneaking all that stuff in there.
