Right before SXSW, SoundCloud contacted us and asked if we could help them with designing an interactive installation piece for their SXSW Creator Clubhouse. After some brainstorming, our team came up with the idea of creating a massive wall of bungee cords to represent sound. Using a SoundCloud gobo, we projected their logo on it at night. Check out a timelapse and photographs of the installation as well as video of people interacting with it after the jump.
Suspending 340 bungee cords with about 10 pounds of tension presented a difficult installation challenge. The whole thing needed to be easily installed and removed, yet safe enough for people to pull on and stretch for the 2 days it was there. We contracted a local welder to build two brackets that could be bolted to awning at the event location. Then, over the course of several hours cut and knotted 8 foot sections of bungee all the way across. We weren’t even done with the thing before people were intrigued and started to interact with it.
Big thanks to SoundCloud for asking us to be a part of this year’s event.
Below is a timelapse of the hanging as well as a view of what the installation looked like at night.
