Archive for Typography

TypArchive

The preservation of the painted text is a passion of mine. Luckily I’m not the only one who feels that its an important task. Alice turned me on to the burgeoning TypArchive which serves the purpose of hosting an ever growing collection of user submitted photographs of painted typography as well as its 3-dimensional handcrafted equivalents. I’ve grabbed a selection of my favorites for this post, but you can spend a good amount of time digging around the site for yourself. Of course, you could also spend some time contributing to the collection for the benefit of everyone else as well. Thanks Alice!

Mucca Design

I’m not sure when their new site launched, but the new work by Mucca Design is, as usual, incredible. Their attention to detail is always inspiring, as is their ability to create such aesthetically diverse but appropriate work. Really into the new site structure as well.

Katie Daisy

Katie Daisy’s work has been blasted across the web recently, but I thought you should take another peek at her folky hand-lettering.

More after the jump.

Kay Rosen

I came across Kay Rosen’s work while at Domy this weekend, and was immediately in love. I’m really drawn to her ability to make you see something new in a subject so familiar. It’s arresting, both visually and conceptually. And it deals with type. I like type. Kay Rosen: AKAK is the only comprehensive book on Rosen, and documents 100 works by her between 1969 and 2009.

Save The Planet, Use Garamond

The next time you think to yourself that you’d like to do more for the environment, just remember to consider your font choices on future design projects. Matt Robinson and Tom Wriggelsworth (who has an awesome name) decided to draw out large scale type specimens of popular fonts to measure ink usage of each. They used the remaining ink in the ballpoint pens as their means of measurement. Expectedly, Impact scored low “green” marks while the comparatively lean Garamond and Courier were at the top of the class. More pictures of the process after the jump.
