New York Subway System Music

mta

Here are some sights and sounds for your sore ears and eyes. Alex Chen, who works at Google’s Creative Lab in Brooklyn developed an interactive musical instrument based on HTML5. It uses the New York Subway System’s real schedule and is based on Massimo Vignelli’s 1972 subway diagram. When you visit the site, it begins in real time and slowly accelerates using the real 24 hour schedule. As trains’ paths cross, they “pluck” each other’s routes like guitar strings, creating a blissful alternative to their normal screeching noises.

Watch the screen capture of it in action after the jump, or head over to MTA.me to take a musical ride on the subway for yourself.

Challenger 25 Years Later

As humans, our ability to continually improve upon our own technologies is astonishing. 20 years to the day after the Russians launched the first human being in to space, the United States launched the first space shuttle, ushering in a new era of relatively easy space travel. Thirty years later, we are at a point at which space tourism is becoming a reality. Imagine where we will be in the next 20 years.

Most. Inspirational. Space. Video. Ever.

inspirational

Take beautiful imagery, a calm relaxing soundtrack and the words of the late great Carl Sagan and what do you get? You get the most inspirational fan created pro-NASA/Space video ever. That’s what. Will someone please tell me where to sign up to be an astronaut?

Ill-Informed Kids Say The Darndest Things

kids

Watching kids try to figure out what old technology is, is hilarious. Even if it is in another language. The best one is the boy at 2:30 who finally figures out that what he has is a record player and immediately tries to scratch on it, only to be told “enough” by the adult.

Command Line Personal Site

dos

Remember when you had to boot out of Windows 3.11 to work in MS-DOS to load some games and stuff? Yeah, I hardly remember either. You can relive those days though with Michael Wilson‘s amazingly out of date personal website. There are links for interacting with a mouse, but all the fun is in navigating the various links using the command line like you did in MS-DOS back in the day. (HELP, DIR and BLOG will get you rolling)
