PUBLIC SCHOOL is a group of creative folk working on the east side of Austin together, yet not together. The same studio, different professions. Similar tastes, varying favorite Bob Dylan song. Consistently unified love for the Mexican food on the east side of town.
Our collective and individual clients include Chronicle Books, Conde Nast, Sweet Leaf Tea, Iron and Wine, Baylor University, Ogilvy & Mather, LIVESTRONG, Pearson Publishing, Stussy, Time Inc., NIKE, The University of Texas, The Sunday Times of London, as well as a few other folks.
A group of us took a little field trip Saturday to the Austin Museum of Art to see their exhibit on Hatch Show Print. It was incredible to see the beautiful posters alongside many of their corresponding wood engravings. It’s truly amazing. If you’re in Austin and dig the hell out of letterpress the way we do, I recommend you take a trip down there and see it all for yourself.

As a child we used to rent VHS tapes from Video Hut around the corner from my house. It was the type of place that used to keep all the tapes behind the counters, so you’d just browse the empty boxes on the shelves. I was constantly sucked in by the highly detailed covers of the Back to the Future. It is easily the series of movies I rented the most as a child. Apparently the man behind those elaborate covers also did the covers of Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and E.T. to name a few other movies you might know. His name is Drew Struzan and you know his work because the only way to have not seen it is to have skipped the movie theaters for the last 30 years.

Sometimes you see a photograph of a city and it makes you want to visit. Sometime I see an illustration and it makes me wish I could live in that world. The work of Borja Bonaque makes me feel that way. His simple cityscapes are interesting and have been in the New Yorker as well as Wallpaper.

I’m filing these under “Things I wish I knew I wanted for Christmas about a month ago”. I just found them today and am in love. Ross Berens designed these beautiful informational posters that make me wish I was 8 years old again and going to Space Center Houston with my Dad.
