The idea that the objects we create are created for our use and needs is what Dan Grayber analyzes with his Mechanisms series. Removing the human from the equation and designing pieces who’s sole purpose is to be self sustaining. The mechanical and symmetrical look of these are odd as art installations, but work really well.
These magnificent and enormous installation pieces are made entirely of salt! The patience and vision of Motoi Yamamoto is astounding. See more of his work after the jump…
Yang Yongliang is an artist living and working in Shanghai. Honestly, I know very little about China, but I am still drawn to his work. His paintings and installation work remind me of destruction and pollution, and could be a critique on China’s expanding and crowded society. If you look closely at his paintings, you’ll notice that what looks like trees on a misty mountainside are actually wire towers.
I’m curious how many people called the fire department to report this installation piece. It is a simulation of a building going up in flames to represent a major fire that took place in Vancouver, about a century ago.
I’m really enjoying the work of Sarah Illenberger, a Berlin-based artist working in art direction, illustration and set design. The choice of materials Illenberger uses to communicate is something I’m especially drawn to, particularly in this billboard campaign. I also love that much of her work functions equally well as both art piece and advertising image. Very strong conceptually, visually interesting, and much of it created by hand. I’m sold.
A few of my favorites after the jump, though honestly I didn’t find a single piece that wasn’t amazing.
