Christian Annyas pulled together this great set of Beer Stamps from the Smithsonian’s website. Beer Stamps were the manner in which the government taxed the alcohol. They sold these stamps, which would then need to be affixed to kegs and bottles at the time of manufacture. It’s amazing to see how detailed the engravings were considering their size.
With every passing generation, the advice we give to the youth of our society changes. Chacho Puebla started to wonder what kind of advice he wished he had received and what he’ll eventually tell his kids about life in these modern times. Using his great-aunt as a stand-in for his grandmother, he produced this set.
In a great oversight on our part, we have never featured the work of Ty Wilkins. I just ran across this poster he did for a design lecture he did at UNT here in Texas in October, and it’s a good reason to also show some other stuff he’s done. I’m particularly fond of his work for Target, which you can see after the jump.
With Steve Jobs’ passing, a lot of attention has been given to his role in the development of the modern computer industry, but one that is often overlooked is that of Susan Kare. The Public Library of Science has a fantastic writeup on her work of designing Macintosh’s graphic interface elements and the inspiration that led to them. It’s a great Sunday afternoon read.
Anthology has a holiday gift guide that they asked me to submit ideas for. You can see my selection here, but I’d recommend checking out the entire magazine. It’s really well designed, and has some great gift selections from a bunch of other cool folks.
