A Backstory
Today is the day we’ve been working towards for the last year and a half. We haven’t been working on the “redesign” for that long, but we have been figuring out what PUBLIC SCHOOL means to us. When we started we wanted it to be a place to showcase our work along with the work of others. Initially we focused almost exclusively on art and design.
You may have noticed in the last few months though that the subject matter we post about has evolved to be more generalized. We realized that the best part about going to PUBLIC SCHOOL as a kid was the broad range of subjects and people you learned about.
We want our site to be an extension of that experience. We want it to be a reminder that along with great design and creative pursuits, there are other subjects that we should learn about as well. You can read about the rest of the details after the jump.
Excuse the crudely enlarged promo graphic and get prepared to be amazed. This Friday at The Highball, Do512 will be holding a World Record Party where a number of world records will be set and broken live, all verified by the world famous URDB. The fellas of PUBLIC SCHOOL will be on hand to set a record and challenge others to break it immediately following. We won’t say what our record is yet, but suffice it to know that it will be one everyone will talk about at the water cooler the next day.
Get your letterman jackets ready because its time for a Pep Rally. This coming Monday we will be launching the redesign of the PUBLIC SCHOOL website. To celebrate we are throwing a good old fashioned Pep Rally at our studio on Thursday, September 2nd.. In attendance will be a marching band, our head coach giving us all a rousing motivational speech and maybe a cheerleader or two.
The whole shindig will get under way at 5:00 PM, when the libations begin to flow with the actual Pep Rally getting started at 7:30 PM when the marching band makes its way to the parking lot. We’ve got a page set up with all of the juicy details and an easy to remember URL for you to check out and bookmark here. If you’re of the Facebookin’ inclination, we’d love it if you could also RSVP at our Facebook event page.
Come on down, it’s gonna be a good time.
Bradley Beesley, director of Fearless Freaks, and Okie Noodling, has a new documentary titled ‘Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo’. I couldn’t describe it any better, so here it is straight from the source:
Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo’ goes behind prison walls to follow convict cowgirls on their journey to the 2007 Oklahoma State Penitentiary Rodeo. In 2006, female inmates were allowed to participate for the first time. In a state with the highest female incarceration rate in the country, these women share common experiences such as broken homes, drug abuse and alienation from their children. Since 1940, the Oklahoma State Penitentiary has held an annual ‘Prison Rodeo’. Part Wild West show and part coliseum-esque spectacle, it’s one of the last of its kind – a relic of the American penal system. Prisoners compete on wild-broncs and bucking bulls, risking life-long injuries. For inmates like Danny Liles, a 14-year veteran of the rodeo, the chance to battle livestock offers a brief respite from prison life. Within this strange arena the prisoners become the heroes while the public and guards applaud. Watch the trailer here.
Screenings for those in Austin 9/17-9/23 at Alamo Drafthouse.
* Great poster, designed by Austin-based designer Luther Himes IV.
No Reservations host, author, and chef Anthony Bourdain recently visited Austin to sample the local fare, and the reviews were exciting. He visits Perlas, East Side King, Odd Duck Farm to Trailer, and, I’m pumped to say, Gourdough’s. It’s just fun hearing Anthony Bourdain talk about a place you helped design. The episode aired a few weeks ago, but for those who missed it, the video is after the jump. Also, a very loosely related, but (to me at least) very funny video of Billy Murray with Mr. Bourdain.
I would be hard-pressed to choose a favorite from Olly Moss’ impressive new series of posters commissioned by the Alamo Drafthouse and Levi’s® for the 2010 Rolling Roadshow Tour (which hits the road next week). Simple, bold, and well executed interpretations of 9 great films. More after the jump.

I was fortunate to meet local author/film-maker Rupert Isaacson yesterday at Me So Hungry. One thing that I will always appreciate about Austin is the community, and the opportunity to strike up conversation with just about anyone. What I didn’t know while we talked was that Rupert is a New York Times best selling author, as well an award winning filmmaker. If you see him around, say hello. Also be sure to look into his award winning work, among others… the horse boy

A couple months back we all gathered around Cody’s computer when he first found Ryan Berkley’s animal illustrations. Luckily, we had the pleasure of meeting him this weekend at the Renegade Craft Fair. We gave him one of our hand stamped Scout Books which he then turned in to an activity book, featuring old men, for us to complete. We had a blast working on it. Check out the final product after the jump.
Also, thanks to Ryan and Lucy for stopping by the studio yesterday before heading out of town. Happy trails!

If you haven’t yet listened to Balmorhea, you really ought to. They are one of Austin’s finest musical ensembles, and they also have a great website. Unlike many band websites, which can be boisterous and outright annoying, Balmorhea’s is clean, classic, and utilizes video which compliments the music well.

I’m not going to say we accept bribes, but Chris Bomely‘s name is one we’re happy to tell you about since he took it upon himself to make us some rad PUBLIC SCHOOL stickers back in the day after he won a t-shirt from us. He’s a super nice guy with some great work. I’ve been digging his weekly iPhone wallpapers, but he just shared a poster he designed with us in the PUBLIC SCHOOL Show & Tell Flickr group which is cool as well. Check out his other wallpapers after the jump.
